Police seize drugs and weapons in Nanaimo
Nanaimo RCMP seized drugs an weapons and arrested a man after they searched a house in the 100 block of Gillespie Street Wednesday.
Nanaimo's RCMP Drug Unit, backed up by the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team, moved in on the house at about 5 p.m.
The search turned up several ounces of illegal drugs, including crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and marijuana, along with brass knuckles, bear spray and replica handguns.
Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, said the replica handguns are impossible to distinguish from real weapons until they are physically examined and, on the street, a police officer would respond to them as if they were actual firearms.
Martin Wade Monague, 42, of Nanaimo, appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Thursday and pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a prohibited weapon. He was sentenced to 15 months in jail.
The seized weapons will be destroyed.
