Some of Nanaimo’s masters lacrosse players showed they’ve still got some serious game.
Nanaimo teams reached both finals this weekend at the Western Canadian Masters Lacrosse Championships, with the Timbermen winning the B division and the Snuneymuxw Native Sons finishing as runners-up in the A division.
The Timbermen 45-plus team won its final 12-7 against the Kitimat Pioneers. Brad Morgan led the way with a hat trick and five assists and Gary Fredrickson also scored a hat trick. Brian Heese was the winning goalie.
In Sunday’s later final, the Native Sons grand masters – also a 45-plus team – lost 12-8 to the Vancouver Coasters. Down 10-5 early in the third, the Sons scored two quick ones to make it 10-7 and fire up the crowd, but couldn’t draw closer.
Ken Morrison led the Sons with four goals and Wayne Baker and John White each had a goal and two assists.
Seven teams, all from B.C., gathered at the Nanaimo Ice Centre to participate in the tournament.
