Nanaimo RCMP detachment is warning the public to be wary of a speeding ticket text scam making its way through the city.

According to an RCMP press release, the Nanaimo detachments switchboard lit up with numerous calls Monday, March 25, from recipients of a bogus speeding ticket text trying to determine if was legitimate or a scam.

The text is the same as one received by dozens of individuals throughout the Okanagan the same day, prompting a news release from the Kelowna RCMP.

The text message tells the potential scam target that they were caught speeding in a school zone and, in order to settle the ticket without having to attend court, they are directed to a website and prompted to provide a credit card number.

“It’s just another scam to get a hold of your money via your credit card,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the release. “Just delete it, but afterwards, make sure you share the text message with friends and family so they don’t fall for it.”
