Man in hospital after truck goes down embankment on Nanaimo Parkway

Man had to be extricated from semi truck at Jingle Pot Road intersection

A man was transported to a Nanaimo hospital this morning after being extricated from a semi truck that went off the highway.

First responders were called to the scene at the south Jingle Pot Road-Nanaimo Parkway intersection at around 8 a.m. Saturday, April 6, after the truck had gone down an embankment. Mike Louie, Nanaimo Fire Rescue acting captain, said there were two people in the heavy semi truck, which had been headed northbound. The other person was out of the truck when crews arrived on scene, he said.

The patient, who was conscious while receiving treatment, was taken by B.C. Ambulance Service to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with unknown injuries.

Crews had to consider a number of factors when attempting to free the man, the fire captain stated, as there were trees and bush around the area.

“We had to stabilize the vehicle initially,” said Louie. “The male occupant had some undisclosed injuries [and had] to be brought out with a clam shell … due to the spot of the vehicle there was some challenging obstacles the crews had to overcome. Crews did a really good job.”

The incident is under investigation by RCMP.
