A new committee will look at ways to improve transportation options for people living in Ladysmith and the surrounding area.

Social Planning Cowichan is leading a new local transportation action committee for Ladysmith, and has started an initial round of community engagement on the topic.

“Getting around Ladysmith and connecting to neighbouring communities like Duncan, Nanaimo, Victoria and anywhere beyond or in between is challenging without a dependable vehicle. Although public transportation is available, it has its limitations,” noted a press release. “So, what can be done?”

The first round of consultation seeks to create an understanding of service gaps and collect suggestions for addressing those needs. The initial engagement, from now until May 19, will include an online survey, meetings and community outreach. The best suggestions will then go out for a second round of public engagement in June and July. After that will come a feasibility study and implementation plan for the most viable options.

Rosalie Sawrie, project facilitator, said in the release that the committee is interested in hearing from everyone, not only those who do not have access to a personal vehicle, but also those who do drive but may choose not to, or who may no longer be able to over the coming years.

This project is an outcome of the work taking place through Ladysmith’s CommUnity Together to End Poverty Hw-nuts’-ulwum project, with funding from the Island Coastal Economic Trust.

The transportation action committee includes representation from the Cowichan Valley Regional District, Stz’uminus First Nation, Town of Ladysmith, Island Health, Ladysmith Resource Centre Association, Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools and community members.

“As a community, we know we have the answers,” noted the release. “Now is the time to explore the possibilities, prioritize the best options and put a plan together to make it happen.”
