Nanaimo's Festival of Banners seeks artist submissions

Deadline to enter Nanaimo’s annual Festival of Banners is April 1.

For the past 30 years, artists have created banners to adorn Nanaimo streets.

Whether people are professional or amateur artists, they are invited to participate in the Festival of Banners. The Nanaimo Arts Council, which oversees the festival, is calling for submissions for this year's event.

Artists are asked to create an original design based on the theme The Wonders of Canada. People must submit their design, entry form and $20 entrance fee by April 1. Forms are available at the Nanaimo Arts Council office, located at 120-256 Wallace St. or Nanaimo North Town Centre's customer service kiosk.

Designs are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Once a banner is approved the artist will be contacted to arrange painting times at Nanaimo North Town Centre. All materials are supplied on site but people may bring their own brushes if they wish.

Banners will be taken down in September. People can pay a $10 non-refundable fee to reserve their banner for purchase. However, the banners will not be sold until September.

The Nanaimo Arts Council is also seeking volunteers. People who are interested in volunteering can contact Brenda Peck, Festival of Banners coordinator, by calling 250-585-1816.
