Music students recognized for excellence at jazz festival

Practise makes perfect for members of the Wellington Secondary School jazz academy.

Wellington’s senior jazz band and individual musicians competed against 23 bands and more than 2,500 students at Environs Jazz Festival in Surrey last weekend. The Grade 12 students finished in the top 4, earning a spot in the Saturday evening showcase concert. Receiving individual honours were:

Llewellyn Littlemore, Most Outstanding Senior Guitar Player Award;

Jesse McNeil, Most Outstanding Senior Drummer;

Niko Lunny, Most Outstanding Senior Piano Player Award;

Christine Morrison, $100 Victoria Conservatory Jazz Camp scholarship;

Jessica d’Oliveira, $100 Victoria Conservatory Jazz Camp scholarship;

Amy McCartie, Blaine Jazz Festival scholarship.

Josh Rey, Most Outstanding Overall Junior Musician, the Most Outstanding Junior Saxophone Player and a $300 scholarship. Grade 12 jazz combo Joshin Around won the Most Outstanding Jazz Combo of the festival.

The Grade 12 jazz band rhythm section was awarded the Most Outstanding Senior Rhythm Section.
