Glass artists host inaugural show

A group of 14 artists working in glass from across the Island and the Gulf Islands showcase their work in a show at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

The inaugural Island Glass Art spring show and sale takes place April 23 and features some of the group’s most inventive work, said artist Chris Smith.

“The creators are gifted glass artists looking for a new way to connect their art with the public, much as potters do,” he said. “Our studios are scattered, so we’ll bring them to Nanaimo for a day.”

The show features a wide variety of styles, with pieces ranging from functional to architectural and decorative.

“We all work in various types of glass, in different styles,” Smith said. “Members of the Island Glass Artists create stained, kiln cast, fused, lampworked, sand-carved and furnace-blown glass.

“You’ll see lamps, jewelry, vessels, glass sculpture, window and door panels and much more displayed and offered for sale.”

The one-day show will see some of the artists available to discuss their work. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the show closes at 5 p.m.
