Some of Nanaimo’s pioneers farmed Harewood’s five-acre plots, but there aren’t many signs left of that aspect of the city’s history.
The Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute is holding an open house Saturday (July 29) at one of the last agricultural five-acre (two-hectare) farm plots in the area.
According to an event poster, the Growing Opportunities Farm Community Co-op and Nanaimo Foodshare have been working together to demonstrate organic growing techniques at a property on Park Avenue. This year, the biosphere research institute partnered in the project and is “researching the historical, ecological, agricultural and community values of the property with the hopes of preserving the land as a demonstration farm and open space,” the poster reads.
Saturday’s open house will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at 933 Park Ave. There will be farm tours at 10 a.m. and noon and guided bird walks at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. There will also be fresh produce for sale and kids’ activities.
