Nanaimo Heritage Days is looking for an exceptional community member to lead its annual parade through downtown Nanaimo on May 21.

The title of Honorary Parade Marshal is a brand new addition to the festivities for 2017. Nominations for the role are now open and can be made through the event’s website.

“What’s special about being the honorary parade marshal is that you’re at the front of the parade with other dignitaries,” said Peter Urquhart, Nanaimo Heritage Days coordinator, adding that nominations are already rolling in.

The official selection will be based on the individual’s community spirit, contributions to Nanaimo, historical significance and time spent in the community. Nominations are open until Monday (May 8).

Also fresh for 2017, the parade will bestow a series of new awards upon entrants, including for heritage theme, community entry, musical entry, float and best of parade.

“We’re still accepting entries for the parade, and they don’t have to be overly complicated,” said Urquhart. “It can be as simple as throwing on a costume that references your own back story.”

Looking through old family photographs, wandering through the museum or reminiscing about old Nanaimo landmarks - these can all be excellent sources of inspiration, said Urquhart.
