Trudy Chatwin and T-Dog glide across calm water in Nanaimo’s downtown boat basin while commuting from their home on Protection Island on Monday afternoon.

Chatwin is one of dozens of Protection Island residents for whom island living means crossing Nanaimo Harbour daily with personal water craft or on the Dinghy Dock Ferry for work, school, shopping and other reasons.
