Peace lanterns will be launched at the lagoon this long weekend.

Nanaimo’s annual Lanterns for Peace ceremony will be held on Sunday (Aug. 6) at Maffeo Sutton Park’s Sway’ A’ Lana Lagoon.

The event is organized each year by the Nanaimo chapter of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

This year’s ceremony will begin with peace songs at 8 p.m. with other music and speakers between 9-9:30 p.m. leading up to the launching of the lanterns at 9:30 p.m.

The City of Nanaimo has declared Aug. 6 Hiroshima Day, recalling the date in 1945 when the atomic bomb was dropped in that city.
