Financial institutions across Central Vancouver Island are inviting participants to join Run for Life on May 25 in support of a good cause.

The 11th annual fundraiser will help purchase new equipment needed to complete two new operating rooms at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

During the last surgical suites expansion in 2005, 10 operating rooms were built; eight were completed and are now in use and two were left “shelled-in.”

Due to the growing demand for emergency, urgent, and pre-scheduled surgeries the additional ORs are now needed.

Run for Life will help the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s pledge of $1.5 million to equip the two shelled-in rooms.

Since its inception in 2004, the run has raised almost $150,000, and organizers are hoping to boost that by $35,000 this year.

Runners can also create an individual or team fundraising page and invite family and friends to make a donation or join the team.

The five-kilometre run or walk takes place in Nanaimo’s Bowen Park. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Bowen Park complex, with the run or walk beginning at 10 a.m.

Fees for adults are $25, with entrance fees for youths under 16 years old are $10.
